The date shake is a traditional Ayurvedic way to build the ojas, or vitality. Dates are rich in antioxidants and cancer protective compounds. They are full of a type of fiber called beta-D-glucan, which has been clinically shown to balance blood sugar levels. Dates are rich in essential minerals such as iron and phosphorous; and are a good source of B vitamins. There are recipes for date shakes in almost every Ayurvedic book, and every practitioner learns about them in training. It is really more of a cappuccino without the coffee. It is warm, soothing, and delicious. Here is my recipe:
Ingredients:
- 3-5 whole dates (I use 3 because more is too sweet for me)
-pinch cinnamon
-pinch cardamom
-pinch ginger
-pinch nutmeg
-2 threads saffron
-milk of your choice (cow, almond, rice, soy)
-10 whole almonds
Preparation:
Soak almonds and dates in water overnight. In the morning, peel the skin from the almonds. It is very easy because they are soft. Pit the dates.
To make the shake:
In a small pan, pour about 8 oz. milk. You can just use the cup you will drink from to measure the amount of milk you need.
Add cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, almonds and dates to milk.
Boil until a foam rises to the top of the milk.
Blend.
Serve with the saffron threads on top.
Enjoy!
