The Autumn seasonal shift is dominated by Vata dosha. Vata is the dosha of change, inconsistency, movement, and decay.
Signs of Vata imbalance include:
-feeling ungrounded
-spacey mind
-unable to sleep at all or waking up a lot in the night
-general anxiety
-worrying a lot
-having irregular digestion
-dry skin
Here are ten things you can do at home to help balance Vata:
1. Full-body oil massage with sesame oil: daily. Leave oil on while soaking in a warm bath for 15-20 minutes, or hang out in your bathrobe and read a good book. Rinse off excess oil.
2. Picchu: Heat a small amount of sesame oil. Take a cloth handkerchief and fold it into a strip that will fit nicely across your forehead. Fold the strip in half and dip the fold in the oil. Lie down and place the oil-soaked portion of the cloth in contact with the middle of your forehead (the third eye space). Stay lying down for at least 20 minutes.
3. Yoga Nidra: this is a guided meditation practice. You can find CDs and YouTube videos easily online, or attend a class.
3. Color.
4. Go outside in nature and take a slow walk.
5. Eat warm, creamy, and spicy foods. Avoid raw foods, salads, granola, crackers, and boxed cereals.
6. Sip hot ginger tea with a pinch of cardamom throughout the day.
7. Avoid caffeine in all forms: coffee, green and black tea, and chocolate.
8. Do not smoke: this includes marijuana and tobacco.
9. Do one thing at a time.
10. Limit screen time: television, smartphone, and computer. Avoid all electronics after 8 PM.
