Today I was walking my dogs when I suddenly felt a terrible confusion of emotions. I felt angry and hopeless and immensely sad. When I got back inside I just felt like crying. I could not figure out what was wrong. I was seriously distraught. I had awakened in the morning feeling happy, excited about my day, but as the day went on I was feeling like something was off. A bit after my dog walk, I was told about the terrible explosions in Boston. It turns out that it was during those first moments after the explosion that I had begun to feel the emotional onslaught. I do believe that I was feeling the pain and fear of the people at the marathon. All day I had been thinking of my friends who were running there.
There is probably nothing I can say here that will ease the loss and pain that many people are feeling tonight. I have seen all kinds of positive postings on Facebook about how there are always good people no matter how many violent ones there are. This doesn't make me feel better, although I am grateful that people are making efforts to put some positive out there and help ease the negative emotions many of us are feeling tonight.
I realize that around the world there are children living in war zones who face these types of tragedies on a daily basis. I don't think that is alright either. What I do think is that we just can't give up on trying to make peace where we are. I don't believe that there is any comforting answer to the question of why these violent types of attacks happen, nor do I believe that debating answers to this question is helpful in solving the problem. But I do believe that each day we can strive to make things better.
In response to these tragedies, it does no good to worry about how we can exert control over all aspects of our life to ensure safety everywhere we go. We must work to improve our culture without relinquishing our freedoms for the sake of a false sense of security. If each of us, everyday, looks for ways to bring good into the world by bringing safety, love, peace, and joy to those we touch, I do believe that we can heal the anger that is seething underneath the social fabric of this country. But we all have to do it, from the politicians on down. We are going to have to put aside our hatred for the benefit of the country...and we need it to be permanent; not just until the media buzz of the Boston bombings dies down.
My heart goes out to all those who were in Boston today. I am sending healing energy their way. That's all I have to say for now.
Thanks for reading.
