"With great power comes great responsibility."
-Voltaire
I thought I would write about this quote today because I think that there's an interesting side to it that doesn't often get discussed.
Our universe exists in a balance of opposites.
Wherever there is something, there is also nothing.
So when we hear that with great power comes great responsibility, it also means that when we encounter things over which we have no power, we have no responsibility.
It is part of our human nature when we get emotionally tied to persons, things and places, to take responsibility over them.
What I have noticed is that in many cases we take responsibility for things over which we have no control. When we take responsibility for things we cannot control, we add unnecessary stress to our lives.
I don't think anyone consciously makes a decision to try and control something we cannot; it is something that seems to "just happen".
However, we all have the power to gain recognition of places in our life where we have taken unnecessary responsibility.
This time of year, when the weather is turning colder, is the perfect time to reflect upon things that can be let go. We can all take advantage of our natural tendency to turn inward during this season. As we progress into Winter, the environmental influences will be perfect to support all of us who want to deepen our meditative practices.
