There's a lot of negativity going around today. Both the winners and the losers in yesterday's election are handing out a lot of negative energy and aggressive commentary in the media. Rather than adding to that, I'm choosing to think about this in another way. If I don't like the outcome of a political process, what am I doing to change things for the future? If I believe that our government is dysfunctional and incompetent, as I hear many people saying, what am I doing in society to address the problems that create this situation? I certainly don't believe that by calling one another stupid (or worse) on social media that any of us is going to create the kind of environment we need to make productive changes for our country. I choose to focus on the changes that I can make in my daily life to make this world a more harmonious place that respects all the people in it.
We can all get emotional over politics. It's alright to feel angry. But don't nurture that anger, because it will poison you and cause you to act like the very thing that makes you angry. Acknowledge your feelings and then let them go. Storing volatile emotions gets us nowhere. The existence of an inner storm that rages each time there is a political discussion has negative effects on our personal health. Stored anger leads to liver problems, infertility, autoimmune conditions, depression, digestive disorders, anxiety, and many other health issues. If you're feeling angry today, don't allow it to control your words and actions. Feel it, acknowledge it, don't judge yourself for having it, and then release it. Then, think about what you are doing to be a light for others in this world, because we can't get anywhere if we're all too busy being angry.
