Last week, one of my friends posted a Facebook request asking people to tell her what keeps us feeling inspired and creative. Her request really got me reflecting on the idea of inspiration and how we can find that spark even when circumstances are difficult.
I realized that what keeps me inspired more than anything is looking outward. People spend too much time analyzing themselves and their situation, which when done to excess causes despair and constant striving. Each day, I keep my eyes open for ways to bring joy and healing to others. On the days when I am having a hard time, I change my perspective by thinking of how I can help others. No matter what is going on with me, I always feel lighter and more hopeful about the world after I show love to another person (or animal).
Even small acts of kindness help to make the world happier. When I go into a retail establishment to buy something, if the workers seem sad or down, I try to make them laugh or compliment them to make them smile. At my offices when I see the groundskeepers working, I thank them for all their hard work and stop to talk to them.
Whatever I accomplish in this life, I can end each day knowing that I brought some happiness to the lives of others. Each smile I bring inspires me to keep going.
